  • That video I posted was sure a hit! Now lets get on to short story I had to write to finish English. At first what they told me to do was freewrite about a thing or a special time that made you and someone grow closer. That special thing and time was Might and Magic 6, when Mac and I started one morning and kept playing for about 2 years. I didn't know this during my freewrite, but it turned out I had to write a short story on the same topic. This was the best MM6 story I could crank out in 10 minutes. Probably only Mac will appreciate this post, and he'll be the only one to catch the fact that I completely made the villain up.

Its not exactly that it's a funny story, except just that some random woman at Missouri college read it. Also you can tell what some of the criteria for a short story was by the dialogue.

It Was Adventure That Brought Them Together

Ryan and Mac had always been good friends, but they weren’t home at the same time for more than a couple of hours each day. Ryan was skulking around moodily almost all the time. He had an adventurer’s heart, but living in the suburbs, adventure was very hard to come by. Oh well, he thought, maybe I’ll just go and buy a computer game. That might be the next best thing.

“Hmmm, Might and Magic VI, eh?” Ryan said to himself. “This looks as though it will be worth its modest price tag, but maybe I should just shop around a little mo--”

“No!” said a magical hermit clad all in grey, who appeared in a poof of blue smoke. “You must buy the game, for Enroth is in great peril, and we need some random teenager to help us, instead of a Navy Seal or something!”

“Me?” said Ryan. “But I’m just some random teenager…”

“I know!” the hermit replied. “Didn’t you hear what I just said?!”

“No,” answered Ryan. But the hermit had not stuck around to hear to his answer.

Ryan had chosen to forget his entire encounter with the crazy mall hobo. He also ignored the fact that his game giving off a throbbing white aura. When Mac got home that afternoon they decided to install the game on their computer. Finally the job was done, and they launched it.

“Alright, here we go,” said Mac.

“You betcha, here we go,” answered Ryan.

“We are interesting and believable characters,” confirmed Mac.

As soon as they had selected the New Game option, they were sent through a rainbow portal thing, spinning and screaming all the way. It was the type of portal best accompanied by the music of Pink Floyd. Although they could never be sure later, they almost thought that Pink Floyd WAS playing as they flew. With a great thud they landed in a town, with only the most basic equipment; they had a wooden club with a spike on the end, a few herbs, a little gold, and some leather boots.

The citizens of the town were obviously under some sort of spell. They stood in the same place, all day and night, looking off into space. In a great pink poof of smoke, the grey hermit reappeared before them. “You’re here at last,” he said. “The problem that you need to tackle is that there is evil everywhere. Now get to work!” And just like that, he was gone again, this time disappearing with green smoke.

“It seems as though the main conflict has just occurred,” said Ryan.

Mac and Ryan were very scared. They decided it was best to check the local shops for some better equipment before they began their questing against evil. Much to their dismay, they found that everything was much too expensive. They also learned that the town in which they were staying was called New Sorpigal. While they were wondering about where Old Sorpigal might be, a man came up to them and asked if they were the new guys in town.

                “Yes,” said Mac.

“Then the way you need to earn money is by killing rats,” said the stranger.

“How does killing rats earn money?” Ryan and Mac asked in unison.

“Rats carry gold,” said the stranger in that kind of snotty know-it-all way. “Haven’t you ever played an RPG before? Not that this is an RPG, this is REAL, as you can see.”

Ryan and Mac decided to brandish their spiked clubs and go out to the fields where they found great packs of rats waiting for them. Sure enough, these rats had gold, and also a host of other mysterious, inexplicable objects that rats shouldn’t have, such as staffs and potions. Huh, thought Ryan.

Then, in a lemon-lime poof of smoke, an evil villain appeared. “It is I, Romulus, that have been causing all the trouble for you meddling kids. If you want to defeat me, you must come to my castle in Kreigspire to fight.”

“Oh no! The rising action of the story!” said Ryan and Mac in unison. “Creepy,” they then said, for twice in a row they had spoken in unison. Romulus was gone, but Ryan and Mac knew the task that lay before them.

For about 1 year of their lives they trained in the world of Enroth, eventually killing much more than rats. They fought various elementals, werewolves, giant spiders, and even dragons. They grew strong, and were ready to take on the final challenge of defeating Romulus. They marched for many days and many nights, until finally they arrived at the foot of the Castle Kreigspire. Romulus appeared on the battlements in a poof of smoke that could only be described as wild cherry in nature. Walking was not popular in this world with hermits and villains.

                “Greetings, fools!” said he.

“Your reign of terror stops here, say we” said Ryan and Mac, sort of in unison but Mac started a split second after Ryan, so they didn’t count it.

                “We’ll see,” said he.

“Your rhyming this time will not get you far, for we’re ready for battle, um, under the stars! Our armor is shining, our swords glinting white, so stop all your rhyming, cause, um, something a fright!” said Ryan, a bit disappointed he had not concluded his speech a little more triumphantly.

                “The climax!” shouted Mac.

The two heroes battled and battled the evil villain, and finally Romulus was killed. They were pretty happy, but at the same time a little unhappy that their adventure was over. They had a big party with everyone they knew in Enroth. Mac, Ryan, and the hermit were all in attendance. They all equipped their swords with Inebriation +12, inspiring them to have a good time putting on dresses and makeup. The hermit sent them home via the same psychedelic portal through which they had come.

“This seems like the falling action,” said Ryan. Mac nodded.

Ryan and Mac had forged a true friendship, and although they enjoyed their time in Enroth, they were glad to be back home. They looked and at each other and enjoyed and big hearty laugh. THE END
